Emissions of greenhouse gases according to IPCC guide-lines

This table contains annual figures on the emissions of greenhouse gases into the air in the Netherlands. This concerns the emissions of total substances in CO2 equivalent and the emissions of the individual gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and fluorinated gases (F-gases). The emissions are broken down by climate sectors, as used within the Dutch Climate Agreement, and underlying sectors. The greenhouse gas emissions to the air have been calculated according to the regulations of the climate panel IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). IPCC was founded by the United Nations and aims to map and share the available knowledge in the field of climate, climate change and their consequences. The IPCC provides (scientific) guidance for the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol. For a complete overview, the air emissions of bunker fuels sold in the Netherlands for international aviation and international shipping are also included. These emissions are not covered by the IPCC directive. They do not count towards the greenhouse gas emissions that the Netherlands provides to the IPCC and are therefore not included in the total figure.

Status of the figures: The figures from 1990 to 2023 are final. In order to obtain a consistent time series the complete data set is (re)calculated when necessary, so as to be able to include the latest insights in the survey, especially in the case of emission factors.

When will new figures be available? Provisional figures for 2024 will be published in September 2025. Part of the 2024 figures will be released in mid-March 2025. This is an initial estimate based on the sum of four quarterly figures, which Statistics Netherlands publishes via another StatLine table. This concerns CO2 and the total greenhouse gas emissions from the climate sectors (Industry, Power, Mobility, Agriculture, Built Environment and Land Use). The underlying details of each climate sector and the breakdown of the other greenhouse gases into CH4, N2O and F-gases will be published in September 2025.
